Submission Guidelines

We have had to close submissions until next year. We'll open up again in January. 

We encourage submissions from writers at any stage of publication, especially authors who have few or no publications.  Previously published work is accepted so long as it is included in a series of mostly unpublished work. Please include acknowledgments along with any information you would like to provide about your work. Upon acceptance we will request a bio, headshot, and any social media links you would like to share.

Title your email with Submissions: (genre). For example, if you are submitting poetry, then you would title your email Submissions: Poetry.

We accept all forms and styles of poetry, from haiku to narrative. Please send poems in a single document and submit 6 to 8 poems or up to 10 pages.

We generally prefer stand alone short stories, whether a single story or a series connected by common themes. We will consider novel chapter so long as they can stand alone.  Please send previously unpublished short fiction of 20 to 25 pages or up to 7,500 words, double-spaced with one inch margins. 

We believe creative nonfiction can take any shape, from letters to memoir, from informative to critique, from short remembrances to long stories.  Please send previously unpublished nonfiction of 20 to 25 pages or up to 7,500 words, double-spaced with one inch margins. 

While most of us here at Bear Flag Press focus on writing, we love visual art. It's ability to capture moments, people, and spaces without language is a powerful expression we would love to showcase. Please send previously unpublished art in a single file and submit 4 to 6 pieces.
